Gig thoughts: Watermans, Falmouth: July 23, 2009

A good Fawlty Towers/Fatty Owls opportunity missed...!

STOP THE COWBOY HAT THIEF! (Tales of Water, Latesness and Cowboy Hats, again...)

I made a rather big and, admittedly stupid, mistake before the gig at Watermans. Or rather a few.

Firstly, I began loading all the gear into the van at home and realised I had nothing to wear at the gig. I'd let my washing/ironing routine (very rock n roll!) slip. So it was a case of ironing some rather damp clothes when I was meant to be en route to Falmouth, just to make them anywhere near wearable.

Then, when I arrived at the venue, I realised things were worse.
I was surprised to see all the other guys already there, as I'm normally quite an early-arriver, and got there right on time.
But then I noticed they had not only arrived, but unloaded ALL their gear too as the vehicles were empty....

Harry was so mad at me he couldn't even bring himself to look at the camera...oops.

Then it struck me - I was late.
By about 40 minutes.

So swanning in, all casual with a McDonalds milkshake in my hand (it was a quick dinner due to aforementioned ironing issue) probably didn't go down too well. Harry put me right at ease by shouting at me, looking at his watch and yelling "Where the f*ck have you been?". Good times.

Fortunately, I still managed to set up before the rest of 'em.
It seemed a beautiful day in Falmouth and the harbour looked gorgeous as the sun set - and then, just our luck of late - the heavens opened and it turned rather wet.

It didn't seem to affect the drinkers though - they still ventured into the pub, and by the time we got started at around 9.30ish it was a pretty good crowd.

For the first time we got to mention our new twitter site (www.twitter.com/WeAreArea51) which I was updating here and there throughout the night.

We noticed a few people taking pictures throughout the night, so if anyone has any (of the band of just of themselves enjoying the night) feel free to send em in.

Gareth's hat was in demand...it probably looks better here than it does on him....

After last week's saloon/rodeo theme at The Bell in Helston, there was continued interest in the hats! My cowboy hat - which is usually detested by Harry - was getting a bit of attention.
Here's a pic of one fan wearing my hat, kindly sent to us by her friend Debbie (who, despite being so friendly initially, was clearly just trying to steal the hat, which she attempted to run off with. Naughty!) :)

We had fun meeting some great new faces at the gig (and always good to see some familiar ones, yes, you Shelley and friends - thanks for the dancing!). Eric met a fellow French person (is there a phrase that says "French person" better? Like "Brit" or "Aussie" or "Yank"?!?!) and we almost had time to dedicate a song, in French, to her. But alas, we were too tight for time.

As we entered into the encore, we had every intention of doing our special double-whammy of Alright Now with a more modern song by a US punk-rock band, but, once again, time caught us out and we had to call it a night after Free.

A quick mingle with the crowd produced some interesting chat, and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves - shout out to the AC/DC fan who was loving Dirty Deeds. Superb.

See ya on the road...

Gareth
